Australian Institute of Sport Swimming Success

The results of the athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport over the years has clearly proven that the insitute is extremely successful in terms of its sporting endeavours. Prior to the Institute of Sport's creation in 1981, Australia claimed only 5 medals at the entire Olympic Games in Montreal 1976. However, after the Insitute was created, the medak tally has continued to rise whereby Australia claimed a total of 58 medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
Athletes who train at the Australian Institute of Sport, through scholarships or otherwise, have proven to be extremely successful, beneficial and imperative to Australia's Olympic success. Out of the 58 medals that were won by Australia at the Sydney Olympics, Institute athletes claimed 31. It has also been found that the number of sports that claimed Olympic medals has risen from 4 to 19 after the Institue of Sport was created.
The success of the Institue has become so great that the Australian Burea of Statistics (2002) stated that, "The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is the leading institution for the development of elite sport in Australia. Its results speak for themselves and it is regarded as a world best practice model for elite athlete development."
Swimming specifically has been effected by the Institute of sport, with major advnaces and new success taking place in the latter years.
It is interesting to note that 95 out of the 164 Olympic Medalist swimmers (58%) won their medals after the institute was created. Furthermore, 39 out of the 70 Olympic gold medalists (56%) won their medals after the institute was created. 16 out of 25 Olympic Swimmers have gained more than one Olympic gold medal in their career (64%) after the institute was created. Finally, the top ten swimmers according to the following list have won 3 or more Olympic gold medals, and 7 out of 10 (70%) won their medals after the institute was created.
Since the creation of the Australian Institute of Sport, the Institute has managed to send a significant amount of swimmers to each Olympics. The folloiwng tables display the number and name of every Institute swimmers that were selected to represent Australia at the Olympics, along with the number of medals they won is their respective events.

Therefore it has become clear that the Australian Institute of Sport plays an imperative role in producing Australia's swimming champions. The Institute is extremely beneficial to Australia and is the catalyst for Australia's swimming success.
